Exceptional Almond Crop for 2007
California’s almond growers have reported a strong 2007 harvest positively impacted by stable prices, decent growing conditions and high quality nuts.
Per pound prices ranging from $1.60 to $2.30 depending on the variety offer welcome stability compared to the dramatic pricing swings of previous years when the range varied from $1.00 to $4.00. According to Don McKinney of the Central California Almond Growers Association, “It’s good for the industry to be stabilized. Supply and demand are in good harmony right now.” McKinney, who has grown almonds for 38 years, noted pest and disease challenges were not widespread though problems controlling mites and navel orangeworm did occur in isolated parts of the state.
Weather, water stressed trees and heavy yields are all possible explanations of the smaller than usual kernel size. However, in markets where larger kernel size is preferable, buyers appear willing to purchase the largest available size.
